The deadliest earthquake to hit in decades

On May 12, 2008, the earthquake hit Sichuan province in China and forever changed thousands of lives

The 8.0-magnitude quake centered in Wenchuan County had left 69,181 people dead, 374,171 injured, 18,498 missing and millions homeless.

Villages were toppled or buried and landslides raked mountains as large portions of Sichuan – where the quake was centered – and two neighboring provinces were wrecked. Nearly 90,000 people were killed or never found, and 5 million were made homeless in the deadliest earthquake to hit in decades.

More than 13,000 aftershocks were reported after the devastating quake, with the strongest measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale.
